|a Attorney and federal appointee Alphonso Jackson was born on September 9, 1945 in Marshall, Texas. Raised in South Dallas, Jackson attended both Lincoln University and Texas A&M University-Commerce before receiving his B.A. degree in political science from Truman University in 1968. Jackson then received his J.D. degree from Washington University School of Law in 1973. Jackson was Director of the Department of Public and Assisted Housing in Washington, DC in 1987. In 1989, Jackson became the first African American president and CEO of the Housing Authority of the City of Dallas, Texas. In 2001, Jackson was appointed secretary and chief operating officer of Housing and Urban Development, becoming secretary in 2004 under the Bush Administration. He resigned as secretary on April 18, 2008. Jackson taught at Hampton University and was director of the Center for Public Policy and Leadership. He served on various national and state commissions in the State of Texas.
