Summary:Politician Mayor Melvin L. "Kip" Holden was born on August 12, 1952 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Holden graduated with his B.A. degree in journalism from Louisiana State University Manship School of Mass Communications in 1974. He earned his M.A. degree in journalism from Southern University in 1982. He earned his J.D. degree from Southern University Law Center in 1985. After working in the field of broadcast journalism, Holden pursed a position in Louisiana State government and was elected as state representative in the Louisiana House of Representatives. He was then elected to complete the remaining term of State Senator. W. Fields Melvin in 2001. In 2004, Holden was elected the first African American mayor-president of East Baton Rouge Parish, Louisiana. Holden received many awards including the Military Order of the Purple Heart Distinguished Service Award. In 2005, Holden helped to aid many of the Hurricane Katrina evacuees that sought refuge in Baton Rouge.
