Summary: | Biologist J.K. Haynes was born on October 30, 1943 in Monroe, Louisiana. Growing up with an interest in biology and medicine, he earned his B.S. degree from Morehouse College in 1964 and his Ph.D. degree from Brown University in 1970. He returned to teach at Morehouse College in 1979. Throughout his professional career, Haynes sought to understand the cellular mechanisms that underlie sickle cell anemia in order to develop better detection and treatment methods for the disease. In 1971, Haynes co-developed a method for screening large numbers of individuals for the sickle-cell gene. Additionally, Haynes's research provided a clearer understanding of the mechanism by which sickle cells lose water with the characterization of the volume-regulatory taurine channel in skate erythrocytes. Named Dean of the Division of Science and Mathematics at Morehouse College in 1999, Haynes was an ardent advocate for increasing the number of minorities in academia. |
