Summary: | Mathematician Fern Y. Hunt was born on January 14, 1948 in New York City. Her grandparents immigrated to the U.S. from Jamaica. After graduating from the Bronx High School of Science, Hunt earned her A.B. degree in mathematics from Bryn Mawr College. She entered New York University's Courant Institute of Mathematics where she earned her M.S. degree and later her Ph.D. degree in 1978. Hunt served as an associate professor with Howard University's Mathematics Department from 1978 to 1993. She went on to start her career with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) in the computing and applied mathematics laboratory. Hunt's research interests are focused on applied probability and dynamical systems, as well as biomathematics. She served as a consultant for organizations such as the National Bureau of Standards and the U.S. Department of Energy. In 2000, Hunt was honored with the Arthur S. Flemming Award for Outstanding Federal Service.
