|a Physician Dr. Richard Payne was born on August 24, 1951, in Elizabeth, New Jersey, where he attended New Jersey's integrated schools. After receiving his B.S. degree from Yale University, Payne obtained his M.D. degree at Harvard Medical School. Payne worked to educate the medical community about the issues and breakthroughs in pain management, co-chairing the expert panel of the Agency for Health Care Policy that established clinical guidelines for pain management in cancer patients, and serving on the Institute of Medicine Committee. He administered pain management sections in Houston, Texas and in New York City at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, where Payne served as attending neurologist and chief of the Pain & Palliative Care Service, in addition to holding the Anne Burnett Tandy Chair in Neurology. As Professor of Medicine and Divinity at Duke University Divinity School, Payne was considered one of the country's foremost experts on pain management and palliative care.
