Summary: | Politician Robert Jackson was born on December 18, 1950 in New York City. In 1975, he graduated from the State University of New York at New Paltz. Jackson was elected to New York City's Community School Board 6 in 1986. As president of the board in 1991, Jackson co-founded the Campaign for Fiscal Equity which sued the state over inadequate school funding in the landmark case Campaign for Fiscal Equity, Inc. v. State of New York (1995). In 2001, Jackson was elected to the New York City Council, serving until 2013, representing Washington Heights and parts of Harlem. Jackson continued to advocate for public education as chair of the education committee. Jackson was the sole Muslim member of the city council during his tenure. In 2003 and 2011, Jackson led two 150-mile protest marches from New York City to Albany, New York to publicize the underfunding of New York schools. |
