Summary:Lawyer Leroy C. Richie was born on September 27, 1941, in Buffalo, New York. He graduated valedictorian of his class at City College of New York in 1970. In 1973, he earned his law degree from New York University. After working in private practice in the New York law firm of White & Case as a transactional attorney, Richie became director of the Federal Trade Commission's New York office in 1978. In 1983, he became assistant general counsel for the Chrysler Corporation and later became vice president and general counsel, the first African American to do so. In 1992, Richie became the first African American to serve as general counsel to the United States Golf Association, and was elected to the organization's board in 1997. Richie often spoke on the need for diversity in the legal profession. He and his wife, Julia C. Thomas, lived in Birmingham, Michigan with their two children.
