Summary: | Governor and state senator David Paterson was born on May 20, 1954 in Brooklyn, New York. He attended Hempstead High School where he graduated in 1971. Paterson earned his B.A. degree in history from Columbia University in New York in 1977, and his J.D. degree from Hofstra Law School in Hempstead, New York in 1983. Paterson was elected to the New York State Senate in 1985, and became the first non-white New York State Senate minority leader in 2002. In 2006, Paterson became the first African American lieutenant governor of New York. After Governor Eliot Spitzer resigned in 2008, Paterson became the first African American and legally blind governor of New York. Withdrawing his bid for a full term as governor, Paterson ran his own radio talk show and taught as an adjunct professor at New York University from 2011-2012. He went on to work as a director of investment for Stifel, Nichoulas and Company.
