Summary:Nonprofit CEO James Compton was born on April 7, 1938, in Aurora, Illinois. He earned his B.A. degree at Morehouse College in Atlanta in 1961. While at Morehouse, he received a Merrill Fellowship, which permitted him to study French literature at the University of Grenoble, in Grenoble, France. In 1965, Compton began his career with the Chicago Urban League (CUL) as a counselor and employment representative for the Chicago branch's job training program. In 1972, he was appointed executive director of the Chicago Urban League. In 1978, he became president and CEO. He focused on education, employment, and voter registration. Under his leadership, the CUL became the first nongovernmental agency authorized by the Chicago Board of Election Commissioners to register voters in 1975. He retired from the CUL in 2006. Compton served on many boards, and was board president of the Chicago Public Library and the Chicago Board of Education.
