|a Federal judge Sterling Johnson was born on May 14, 1934 in Brooklyn, New York. After high school, Johnson served for three years in the U.S. Marines. He then returned to New York and joined the police department in 1956 as an officer. At the same time, he enrolled at Brooklyn College and obtained his degree after eight and a half years of part-time study. Johnson attended Brooklyn Law School and graduated in 1966. In 1967, Johnson became an assistant U.S. attorney, acquiring a reputation as a tough prosecutor. After three years, Johnson was appointed executive director of the Civilian Complaint Review Board, investigating allegations of police misconduct. Subsequently, Johnson became the special narcotics prosecutor for New York City, garnering acclaim for his outspoken stance on the "War on Drugs." In 1991, President George H.W. Bush appointed Johnson to the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of New York.
