|a Educator and academic administrator Barbara A. Lafoon Sizemore was born on December 17, 1927 in Chicago, Illinois. She received her B.A. degree and her M.A. degree from Northwestern University, as well as her Ph.D. degree from the University of Chicago. In 1963, Sizemore was among the first African American female principals of a Chicago school. Nine years later, she was elected superintendent of the District of Columbia's public school system. As an associate professor at the University of Pittsburgh in 1977, she researched schools in disadvantaged neighborhoods whose students were predominately African American. As dean of DePaul University's School of Education, she incorporated her findings into the School Achievement Structure. Schools following her routines reported success in raising their students' test scores. Sizemore continued to contribute to educational theory as a writer and member of the National Alliance of Black School Educators. Sizemore passed away on July 24, 2004, at age 76.
