|a Bishop John Burgess was born March 11, 1909, in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He earned his B.A. and M.A. degrees from the University of Michigan; his M.Div. from the Episcopalian Theological Seminary in 1934. He was ordained in 1935 and began his ministry in his home parish at St. Phillip's Church in Grand Rapids. In 1946, he became chaplain of Howard University, where he served for ten years. In 1951, He was appointed a canon of the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C. In Boston, he was a bishop suffragan. In 1970, Burgess became the first African American bishop of the Episcopalian Church. He established the Joint Urban Fund, which contributed financial support to agencies fighting poverty. Burgess retired from the Episcopalian church in 1975. He served as interim dean at Yale and chairman of the board of trustees of St. Augustine's College in North Carolina. Burgess passed away August 24, 2003 at age 94.
