|a Educator and author Philip Lorenzo Brown was born January 16, 1909, in Annapolis, Maryland. He graduated from Stanton High School in Annapolis in 1926. He graduated from Bowie Normal School, which later became Bowie State University, in 1928. In 1947, Brown earned his B.A. degree in education from Morgan State University, and later earned his M.A. degree in education from New York University. He began his teaching career when he was nineteen years old, working in the Anne Arundel County school system. In 1938, Brown led the effort to sue the Anne Arundel Board of Education in order to gain equal pay for African American teachers. In 1970, Brown retired from education, and focused on writing. He is the author of four books, including A Century of Separate But Equal Education in Anne Arundel County and The Stanton Elementary School Story. Brown passed away on October 13, 2009 at age 100.
