Summary:Mayor Ron Kirk was born in Austin, Texas on June 27, 1954. After earning his B.A. degree from Austin College in 1976, he earned his J.D. degree in 1979 from the University of Texas School of Law. After two years of private practice, Kirk went to work for Texas Senator Lloyd Bentsen. After moving to Washington, D.C. to work in the Clinton Administration, Kirk returned to Texas as Texas Secretary of State. In 1995, he was elected as the first African American mayor of Dallas. He was reelected in 1999. As mayor, Kirk was credited for revitalizing the Dallas economy. He stepped down as mayor in 2001 to run for the U.S. Senate but lost. Kirk returned to the practice of law and sat on the board of several corporations and organizations. In 2009, President Barack Obama appointed Kirk as U.S. Trade Representative, where he served until 2013.
