Summary:The Reverend Doctor Calvin Otis Butts III was born on July 19, 1949, in Bridgeport, Connecticut. He earned his B.A. degree from Morehouse College in 1972; his M.Div. degree in church history from Union Theological Seminary in 1975; and his D.Min. degree in church and public policy from Drew University in New Jersey. While in graduate school, Butts was hired to work at Abyssinian Baptist Church as an office assistant. He became assistant pastor and was active in civil rights activities, launching an investigation into police brutality in New York City. He was appointed head pastor in 1989. He established the Abyssinian Development Corporation, which sponsored housing and commercial developments in Harlem. Reverend Butts served as president of the Council of Churches of New York. In 1999, he was appointed president of the State University of New York College at Old Westbury. He served on the National Black Leadership Commission on AIDS.
