|a Blues musician Fred Cash was born October 8, 1938, in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Cash began performing in church at the age of twelve with his sixteen-year-old neighbor, Sam Gooden. They formed a rhythm and blues quintet called Four Roosters and a Chick. When the group moved to Chicago, Cash's parents prevented him from joining them. In Chicago, two new singers, Curtis Mayfield and Jerry Butler joined the Roosters and became 'Jerry Butler and the Impressions'. When Butler left the group a few years later, Fred Cash dropped out of high school and rejoined the group in Chicago. In 1961, the quintet moved to New York and recorded the hit "Gypsy Woman". In 1963, the Brooks brothers remained in New York. Cash, Curtis Mayfield and Sam Gooden returned to Chicago and continued writing hit songs including, "It's All Right" (1963) "Keep On Pushing" (1964), "People Get Ready" (1965), and "We're a Winner" (1968).
