Summary:Education chief executive Rachel Noel was born on January 15, 1918 in Hampton, Virginia. She earned her B.A. degree from Hampton Institute, later named Hampton University, and she received her M.A. degree in sociology from Fisk University. In 1965, she became the first African American elected to the Denver Public School's Board of Education. In 1976, Noel became the first African American to serve on the University of Colorado's Board of Regents. In 1978, she won statewide election to a six-year term on the board and served a one-year term as chair of the board. She was a professor at Metropolitan State College as well as chairperson of the school's African American Studies Department. She served as a member of the Chancellor's Advisory Committee for Health Sciences at the University of Colorado, Boulder and Denver, and as a commissioner for the Denver Housing Authority. Noel passed away February 4, 2008 at age 90.
