Summary: | Singer Katherine Anderson Schaffner was born on January 16, 1944, in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Raised in the Detroit suburb of Inkster's Carver Homes, Schaffner attended Inkster High School. At the age of seventeen, she and four other girls were discovered by Motown Records after entering a talent competition. Signed as The Marvelettes, their song "Please Mr. Postman" became the nation's number one single in 1961. The Marvelettes were the first Motown act to achieve success among a wide audience, playing at the Howard Theatre, Apollo Theatre, Regal Theatre, and other popular venues. The Marvelettes continued their success with Playboy and Beachwood 4-5789, in 1962; Too Many Fish in the Sea, in 1964; Don't Mess with Bill, in 1965; The Hunter Gets Captured by the Game, in 1967; My Baby Must Be a Magician, in 1968 and That's How Heartaches are Made in 1969. Schaffner retired from show business. |
