Summary:Education administrator Alexander Jefferson was born on November 15, 1921 in Detroit, Michigan. The grandson of Morehouse College's founder, he received his B.A. degree from Clark College in Atlanta, Georgia in 1942. In April 1943, Jefferson received orders to report to Tuskegee Army Air Field to begin flight training. He was classified as a replacement pilot for the 332nd Fighter Group. In June 1944, Jefferson flew eighteen missions until he was shot down and captured. He spent eight months in a POW camp and was liberated on April 29, 1945. Upon returning to civilian life, Jefferson received his M.A. degree in education in 1954 from Wayne State University. He taught for Detroit Public Schools and became an assistant principal in 1969. He served the Michigan School System for over thirty years. In 2007, Jefferson received the Congressional Gold Medal. He was a founder of the Detroit and National Chapters of the Tuskegee Airmen.
