| Summary: | Dentist and political activist Dr. John Logan Cashin was born on April 16, 1928, in Huntsville, Alabama. He attended Fisk University and Tennessee State University in Nashville, Tennessee. He earned his D.D.S. degree from Meharry Medical School in 1952. He was drafted into the United States Army and became chief of dental services for soldiers stationed near Fontainebleau, France. After two years, Cashin returned to the United States, where he became an active participant in the Civil Rights Movement. In 1967, he helped found the National Democratic Party of Alabama (NDPA) and became the first chairman of the party. He led a delegation to the Democratic National Convention in 1968 and challenged the all-white delegation. In 1970, Cashin was the NDPA candidate for governor of Alabama. He ran against George Wallace and received more than sixteen percent of votes. Dr. John Logan Cashin passed away on March 23, 2011 at age 82.
