Summary:Banker and real estate agent Robert R. Lavelle was born on October 4, 1915 in Cleveland, Tennessee. He had a twenty-one year career at the black-owned newspaper, The Pittsburgh Courier, working in the office, mailroom and in accounting. Lavelle left the paper for four years when drafted into service during World War II. Lavelle pursued his education in night school while working at the Courier and received both his B.S. and M.A. degrees from the University of Pittsburgh in 1951 and 1954, respectively. Lavelle left The Pittsburgh Courier in 1956 to run his own real estate business, Lavelle Real Estate. He rescued the ailing Dwelling House Savings and Loan business in 1957, reinventing the bank while building its capital reserves. The bank served African Americans who would not otherwise qualify for bank loans. Lavelle maintained both of his businesses into his nineties. Lavelle passed away on July 4, 2010 at age 94.
