Summary:Biologist and professor George H. Jones was born on February 21, 1942 in Muskogee, Oklahoma. He received his B.A. degree in biochemical sciences from Harvard University in 1963 and his Ph.D. degree in biochemistry from the University of California, Berkeley in 1968. After completing a postdoctoral fellowship in Geneva, Switzerland in 1970, Jones joined the faculty of the University of Michigan where he chaired the department of cellular and molecular biology from 1980 to 1982 and became a full professor in the department of biology in 1984. Jones accepted the position of dean of the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia, and later became the Goodrich C. White Professor in biology at Emory University in 1996. His research explored several topics in microbiology, but his primary focus was the mechanism and regulation of antibiotic synthesis in bacteria. Jones received a three-year National Science Foundation grant in 2003.
