Summary:Educator Richard Stephenson, Jr., was born on June 4, 1929 in Tennessee. Stephenson attended Tennessee A & I State College, earning his B.S. degree in chemistry. He would later return to school for his M.A. degree and his Ed.D. degree. After serving in the United States Army and working as a research associate in a laboratory, Stephenson began teaching in 1959 in Chicago. He quickly climbed the administrative ladder, serving first as an assistant principal at Forrestville Elementary in 1962, and by the time of his retirement in 1993, interim general superintendent of Chicago Public Schools. Stephenson also served as the vice-president of the Chicago area Boy Scouts and was involved in numerous other organizations. Honored as an outstanding alumnus of Tennessee State University by the National Association for Equal Opportunity in Education, he and his wife Ruby parented four children.
