Summary: | Annotation This conference focussed on the status of nuclear physics as we approach the millennium. Among the main topics addressed were (1) the exploration of the limits of existence of nuclei in terms of the number of protons & /or neutrons they can contain & the combinations of neutrons & protons which can exist, (2) recent progress in exploring the properties of nuclei under extreme conditions of rotation & temperature, (3) nuclear reaction mechanisms & nuclear reactions as a tool to reach exotic nuclei, (4) nuclear reactions with radioactive beams, (5) impact of nuclear physics in astrophysics, (6) applications of very sensitive nuclear techniques to measuring tiny effects in our environment, the composition & nature of materials, dating archeological artefacts, (7) applications to medicine such as tumor therapy & to the transmutation of nuclear waste. Annotation Exotic nuclei, gamma ray spectroscopy, reactions and radioactive nuclear beams, nuclear astrophysics, high-energy collisions, and applications are the overall concerns of the 132 papers. Among the specific discussions are probing the halo with intensity interferometry, some first results from the MISTRAL program at ISOLDE in using a new technology for measuring masses of very short-lived nuclides with very high accuracy, nuclear explorations beyond the proton drip-line, large deformation change in iridium isotopes from laser spectroscopy, the shell structure of neutron-rich light nuclei, inducing shape changes by quasiparticle alignment, yields of neutron-rich isomers produced by deep inelastic collisions, thermal hard-photons from hot fragmenting nuclei, tumor therapy with heavy charged particles, and infrared synchrotron-accelerator diagnostics. There is no subject index. Annotation c. Book News, Inc., Portland, OR (booknews.com). |
