Summary:Annotation Restless chemicals deep inside the Earth and on other planets are the topic of the 27 papers. The terrestrial section includes insights on seismic evidence for the volatiles below 200 km, mantle devolatilization and rheology in the framework of planetary evolution, and the halogen geochemistry of mantle fluids in diamond. Among the alien volatiles are surface ices in the outer solar system, water on Mars and Venus, and Mercury's atmosphere and its relation to the surface. Experimental studies are also described, such as Raman spectroscopy of alkaline earth hydroxides, impact-induced degassing of noble bases from olivine, and the thermodynamic stability of hydrous silicates. No subject index. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
