Summary:Chaplain professor Reverend Dr. Latta Roosevelt Thomas was born on October 12, 1927, in Union, South Carolina. He earned an A.A. degree from Friendship College in Rock Hill, South Carolina, in 1949. Thomas was salutatorian of his class at Benedict College in Columbia, South Carolina, in 1951, where he received his B.A. degree. He earned his B.Div. degree from Colgate Rochester Seminary in 1955 and an S.T.M. degree from Andover Newton Theological Seminary in 1966. Thomas returned to South Carolina and taught at Benedict College, in addition to serving as pastor of Second Calvary Baptist Church in Columbia for more than twenty years. Thomas earned a D.Min. degree from Andover Newton in 1973. Thomas published numerous articles and two books. As a member of the Progressive National Baptist Convention, and the NAACP, Thomas was past chairman of the South Carolina Academy of Religion.
