Summary:Documentary filmmaker and stage actor William Greaves was born on October 8, 1926 in New York City. Beginning his career as an actor, he joined the prestigious Actors School in 1949 before moving to Canada in 1952 to study writing and directing at the National Film Board. Greaves returned to the United States and worked for United Nations Film and Television Department in the African Academy of Arts and Research. He established William Greaves Productions in 1964 and started creating his own films. In 1968, he began producing Black Journal, a monthly television program and left two years later after winning an Emmy Award. Greaves produced such films as Ida B. Wells: A Passion for Justice and Ralph Bunche: An American Odyssey. In all, he produced more than 200 documentaries and won more than seventy international film festival awards. Greaves passed away on August 25, 2014 at age 87.
