Summary:Judge Charles E. Freeman was born in 1933, in Richmond, Virginia. He graduated from Virginia Union University and John Marshall Law School. Freeman served as arbitrator on the Illinois Industrial Commission and as commissioner of the Illinois Commerce Commission. He was elected to the Circuit Court of Cook County in 1976. In a historic ceremony in 1982, Freeman swore in his friend Harold Washington as the first black mayor of Chicago. In 1990, Freeman was the first African American to be elected to the Illinois Supreme Court. When elected chief justice in 1997, he decided to look into the issues of the marriage fund and on prosecutorial misconduct. In 2002, Justice Charles Freeman became the Illinois Supreme Court's senior member when he was retained for another ten-year term. Freeman received dozens of awards for his professional and volunteer work, and served as a member of several bar associations and professional judiciary societies.
