Summary:Basketball referee and professor Kenneth R. Walker, Sr. was born in East Providence on December 19, 1930. Walker earned his B.A. degree from Providence College before he began teaching in the East Providence School District. He received his M.Ed. in 1962 from Rhode Island College, where he later held a professorship for several years. In addition to teaching, Walker directed several programs geared toward improving educational opportunities for low-income students and bettering the quality of urban education in Rhode Island, including Project Upward Bound and the Teacher Corps. In 1963, Walker became a basketball referee and officiated games at the collegiate level. Additionally, he served as vice chairman of the Rhode Island Board of Parole. For his service to youth and education, Walker was honored many times. He was also a member of several educators' and referees' organizations.
