| Summary: | Educator Thelma Jarmon Vass Groomes was born in North Carolina in 1911, but was raised in Washington, D.C. After earning her B.A. degree from Howard University in 1932, Groomes worked at the U.S. Department of Labor as a statistical clerk. Groomes began teaching at Hine Junior High School in 1959, where she remained until retirement in 1972. While there, she was active in several student organizations, including a trip to the United Nations in New York. After her retirement, she remained active in several organizations, serving several terms as president of the Howard University Women's Club and serving on the Women's Committee of the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts. She was a lifelong member of the National Education Association and the NAACP and was named Woman of the Year by the Afro-American. Groomes had two children, two grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren. Groomes passed away on August 8, 2011 at the age of 100.
