| Summary: | Educator and civic leader Thelma Daley was born in Annapolis, Maryland. She earned her B.S. degree from Bowie State University in Bowie, Maryland; her M. A. degree in counseling and personnel administration from New York University; and her Ed.D. degree from George Washington University in Washington, D. C. Daley began her career at Baltimore County Public Schools as the coordinator for guidance and counseling. She was also a visiting professor at several colleges and universities, including the University of Wisconsin and Harvard University. Daley was national president of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority from 1975 to 1979 and was the president of the American Personnel & Guidance Association and the American School Counseling Association. Daley was also national director of the Women in the NAACP and promoted public knowledge of AIDS and SIDS. By presidential appointment, she was the first woman to chair the National Advisory Committee on Career Education.
