Summary: | Corporate executive Calvin Darden was born on February 5, 1950, in Buffalo, New York. He earned his B.S. degree in business management from Canisius College in Buffalo, New York. While attending school, he began his career working part-time at the local UPS terminal, and became a full-time employee after graduation. In January 1974, Darden was promoted to customer service supervisor, then, hub manager. Later, he supervised three packaging centers and oversaw a nine state region. In 1995, Darden was appointed the company's first quality coordinator. He developed and implemented strategies focused on customer satisfaction, employee empowerment and methods of measurement. Darden also added technology that allowed central delivery points. Darden was appointed senior vice-president of U. S. operations of United Parcel Services, responsible for the pick-up and delivery of 13.5 million packages a day. In 2002, Darden was ranked eighth of Fortune magazine's 50 Most powerful Black Executives in America.
