|a Producer and orchestrator Harold Wheeler was born on July 14, 1943 in St. Louis, Missouri. A child prodigy, Wheeler played the piano for Sunday school at age five. He graduated from Sumner High School in 1960 and Howard University in 1964. Wheeler earned a M.M. degree from Manhattan School of Music in 1968, and became an executive for CBS-FM Radio. In 1971, Wheeler became the youngest conductor on Broadway for Promises, Promises. Musical director for Melvin Van Peebles' Ain't Supposed to Die a Natural Death in 1971 and for Don't Play Us Cheap in 1972, Wheeler was nominated for six Tony Awards. Winning the Drama Desk Award for Hairspray for Best Orchestrations, his motion picture credits include Straight Out of Brooklyn; Spanish Judges; and Cotton Comes to Harlem. Wheeler was arranger and/or music director for the 1996 Olympics; the 1996 and 2000 Democratic National Conventions; 2002 American Film Institute Awards; and the 2003 Academy Awards.
