|a Executive assistant Richard Gilbert Womack was born on November 18, 1939 in Danville, Virginia. After graduating from high school and serving in the U.S. Army, Womack took a steel working job that launched his career with the AFL-CIO. Womack worked for the union as assistant director of the Human Resources Development Institute and director of the Department of Civil Rights before becoming assistant to the American Federation of Labor - Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) President John Sweeney in 2003. In this capacity, Womack advised Sweeney on civil, human and women's rights, immigration issues and oversaw outreach. Womack also served on the NAACP's Board of Directors, chairing the National Board of Director's Labor Committee; chairman of the board of the National Coalition on Black Civic Participation; as acting executive director of the Leadership Conference on Civil Rights; and on the United States Board of Federal Prison Industries.
