Summary: | Columnist Dewayne Wickham was born on July 22, 1946 in Baltimore, Maryland. Attending Cherry Hill Elementary School and Junior High School, he joined the United States Air Force in 1964. Earning his B.S.J. degree from the University of Maryland in 1974 and his M.P.A. degree from the University of Baltimore in 1982, he worked for U.S. News and World Report from 1974 to 1975 and the Baltimore Sun from 1975 to 1978. Working for Dr. Mary Frances Berry in the Carter administration from 1978 to 1980, he started his column for USA Today in 1988. He was a founding member of the National Association of Black Journalists, serving as president from 1987 to 1989. The founding dean of Morgan State University's School of Global Journalism & Communication, he authored Fire At Will in 1989; Woodholme: A Black Man's Story of Growing Up Alone in 1995; and was editor of Thinking Black: Some of the Nation's Best Black Columnists Speak Their Mind in 1996.
