|a Comedian and social activist Dick Gregory was born on October 12, 1932 in St. Louis, Missouri. Gregory attended Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois, on a track scholarship. His college education was interrupted when he was drafted into the U.S. Army where he first worked as a stand-up comedian. In 1961, Gregory was hired to work at the Chicago Playboy Club. In 1964, Gregory released his autobiography Nigger, which sold seven million copies. In the mid-1960s, Gregory became involved in the Civil Rights Movement and ran unsuccessfully in elections against Chicago Mayor Richard Daley in 1967 and against President Richard Nixon in 1968. A nutrition guru, Gregory was the creator of the Bahamian Diet Nutrition Drink. He ranked eighty-first on Comedy Central's list of the 100 Greatest Stand-Up Comedians of All Time. Gregory published the following several books. Gregory passed away on August 19, 2017.
