Summary:Astronaut and aircraft commander Col. Frederick Drew Gregory, Sr. was born on January 7, 1941 in Washington, D.C. The nephew of surgeon, Dr. Charles Drew, he attended the U.S. Air Force Academy and received his B.S. degree in 1964. He earned his M.S. degree from George Washington University in information systems in 1977. Gregory served in the Air Force as a pilot, flying 550 combat missions in Vietnam. He received the Distinguished Flying Cross in 1967. In 1978, Gregory was selected as an astronaut by NASA, flying three Space Shuttle missions. In 1989, he also became the first African American space commander when he commanded the Orbiter Challenger. He also commanded a crew of six on his last mission in 1991. Gregory was appointed associate administrator at NASA. He was promoted to NASA deputy administrator and briefly served as acting administrator, the first African American to hold this position.
