Summary:Lawyer William "Mo" Cowan was born on April 4, 1969 in Yadkinville, North Carolina. Cowan graduated with his A.B. degree in sociology from Duke University; and his J.D. degree from Northeastern University School of Law in Boston, Massachusetts in 1994. After working as a litigator and advisor for the Boston law firm of Mintz Levin, he became chief legal counsel to Massachusetts Governor Deval L. Patrick in 2009, and later became Governor Patrick's chief of staff. In 2013, after John F. Kerry's confirmation as Secretary of State of Massachusetts, Cowan was appointed interim U.S. Senator for Massachusetts. He was the second African American senator to represent Massachusetts, and the first to serve alongside another African American in the Senate. After his time in the U.S. Senate, Cowan joined the Boston law firm of Mintz Levin as of counsel and served as President and Chief Executive Officer of ML Strategies, LLC.
