Summary: | The 10th edition of the Alberta Biennial grew from an innovative experience. Not only did the curators travel extensively across the province in search of creative talent, they brought the 24 selected artists together before the event for a series of workshops to facilitate an open conversation on the status and impact of biennials. Presented by both the Art Gallery of Alberta and Banff Centre for the Arts and Creativity¿s Walter Phillips Gallery, the diverse works reveal common threads relating to interstitiality and site as well as a preoccupation with language that reflects the way in which artists see reverberations within larger discourses in their communities. The authors discuss the Alberta Biennial specifically, as well as the role played by biennials around the world today. The authors: Kristy Trinier is the Director of Visual, Digital and Media Arts at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, and previously was Curator at the Art Gallery of Alberta. Peta Rake is the Curator of Walter Phillips Gallery and the Banff International Curatorial Institute at Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity. Lorenzo Fusi is the Visiting Academic Curator at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at the Alberta College of Art + Design. Previous positions include International Curator at the Liverpool Biennial. The artists: Ashley Bedet, Devon Beggs, Andrew Buszchak, Tamara Lee-Anne Cardinal, Roy Caussy, Mark Clintberg, Gerry Dotto, Craig Fahner and Neal Moignard, Svea Ferguson, Megan Green, Tia Halliday, Kristopher Karklin, Taryn Kneteman, Kristopher Lindskoog, Jay Mosher, Wil Murray, Justin Patterson and Stacey Watson, Paul Robert, Marigold Santos, Parker Thiessen, Justin Waddell, Nicole Kelly Westman. |
