This book is a heroic attempt to address the complexities of the psychosocial aspects of chronic pain. Written by 14 authors representing a wide range of therapeutic disciplines, it provides a multidimensional perspective on research, education, and clinical practice. The volume consists of four major sections: "Philosophical and Conceptual Issues" (2 chapters); "Sociocultural Perspectives" (3 chapters); "Treatment Strategies" (7 chapters); and, "Future Directions" (1 chapter). Chapters are well written and each contains a reference list. Many include helpful figures and tables as well. The volume makes a distinguished contribution to the literature in this important area. Its value lies both in its academic credibility and its clinical usefulness. Highly recommended for libraries serving the needs of health care students and practitioners. -R. E.
