Hutner (English, Univ. of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign) and Mohamed (English, CUNY Graduate Center) offer ten essays about changing views of a liberal arts philosophy in public institutions of higher education. The collection presents a three-prong "new deal" to revitalize liberal arts programs. This triple solution entails modifications in the ways the programs are financed; modifications in the ways programs assess themselves; and redesigns of liberal arts departments with a humanities focus. The essays are all by respected and experienced scholars, among them Jeffrey Williams (Carnegie Mellon), Yolanda Moses (Univ. of California, Riverside), and Christopher Newfield (Univ. of California, Santa Barbara). Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students, researchers, faculty, professionals. --Theresa L. Stowell, Siena Heights University
