Kark (geography, Hebrew University of Jerusalem) analyzes the period from Napoleon's incursion into Palestine to the fall of the Ottoman Empire during which the seaport community of Jaffa evolved into ^D["a new city, very different in size, character, and layout from the traditional Middle Eastern town of the early nineteenth century.^D]" From the methodological perspective of historical geography, she objectively relates the enormous growth and change of Jaffa. Using extensive economic, ethnic, demographic, and physical data as well as an analysis of governmental and external influences, Kark assesses the development of Palestine's largest city. Her text is considerably enhanced by illustrative maps and charts and by well-chosen photographs. Recommmended particularly for libraries interested in urban studies and in the eastern Mediterranean region. Upper-division undergraduates and above.
