In recent years, big data has been frequently touted as the new reality in research, business, and nearly everything else. This work examines the promise and realities of big data specifically as it relates to geographically referenced information. The authors discuss how the use of big data has altered a variety of research areas within the realm of geography and has given rise to potential for employing geographically referenced data in many other research areas. The text includes several black-and-white, low-resolution diagrams and maps. It features a run-in style index, endnotes for each chapter, and a lengthy combined bibliography. Though many books cover big data and geography, these works are generally more specialized, focusing on one subject area or on practical applications and techniques. Most notable among these is The Rise of Big Spatial Data (2017). This thoughtful overview, though too advanced for most undergraduates, should find a home in academic libraries serving programs in geography, geographic information systems, or data analytics. Summing Up: Recommended. Graduate students through faculty. --Joel Cummings, Washington State University
