Questions underlying the specification of biological form have been addressed in several organisms from a number of experimental perspectives. Sachs has chosen several of the central problems concerning pattern formation in vascular plants and presented and discussed the literature in a series of research essays. The author focuses on the development of plant tissues, and the experiments discussed are chiefly the classic ones. There is little discussion of controls or changes in gene expression as they relate to pattern formation in plant tissues. Sachs assumes some reader familiarity with the supporting literature, and only selected experiments are presented in detail. The outline and format of the book are excellent, and the illustrations complement the text well. Will be particularly interesting to graduate students and researchers in plant development.-L. M.
