Nineteen years after the publication of Stephen L. J. Smith's Dictionary of Concepts in Recreation and Leisure Studies (CH, Mar'91, 28-3666) appears another work of its kind, oriented to students and scholars in the field of leisure studies. Blackshaw (Sheffield Hallam Univ., UK) and Crawford (Univ. of Salford, UK) present over 230 entries covering a broad range of concepts and theories. Entries range from "abnormal leisure" and "anomie" to "zombie categories" and "zones." Smith's dictionary offers more detailed essays, accompanied by references; this new dictionary presents concepts and explanations in a much briefer way. It will enable students to easily access definitions of key terms, and introduce them to a range of contemporary ideas about leisure. As the publisher indicates, this new work provides a critical survey of the field and offers readers "authoritative and comprehensive accounts of the basic concepts and leading figures."
