Two books put out by the AA (British Automobile Association) look at England's Cotswolds and the Scottish Highlands, both very popular areas for American visitors to Britain. The Highlands appeal to those enamored of tranquility and ruggedly handsome terrain. The Cotswolds, 100 miles west of London, are known for distinctive Old World architecture and charming villages. Each book offers an atlas of detailed road maps as well as a number of well-planned daylong tours by car and walks of 45 minutes to 6 hours duration (Cotswolds also traces a 10-day walk along the 100-mile Cotswold Way). A gazetteer keyed to the atlas describes each locale's notable qualities and recommends guest houses, hotels, and the like. The wildlife, spectacular geography, and unpredictable weather are highlighted in the Highlands guide; villages and countrysides are the focus in the Cotswolds guide. Both feature numerous attractive color photos, and both are indexed. DGR.
