Crystal has edited an impressive number of reference works in language and linguistics, of which A First Dictionary of Linguistics and Phonetics (CH, Jul'81) was among his earliest. Additional terms have been added with every edition, reflecting both a broader scope and the increased complexity of the field. This sixth edition is not only thicker but larger in format and type font. Unfortunately, it is now too large to handle easily, and the new typeface is harder to read because of lack of contrast. Nevertheless, all academic and large public libraries who lack the fourth edition should acquire this one, since linguistics is important to a range of disciplines, including philosophy, psychology, mathematics, discourse analysis, sociology, computer science, and neuroscience. For libraries supporting programs or research in linguistics itself, this new edition is a must. Although most existing entries are not significantly updated, many new terms (e.g., "palatograph," "paycheck sentence," "peace linguistics," "phi features," "phenomoid") have been added, along with new lists of abbreviations and symbols. ^BSumming Up: Essential.
