Written specifically for this volume, most of these articles report results from contemporary research. The focus on system responses to woman battering includes issues of measurement, police policies and programs, and intervention programs. The contributing authors are recognized for their work in this area and have produced an excellent group of essays. The quality of the referencing varies from chapter to chapter. There is effective use of selected tables and illustrations. The writing is fairly consistent and readable at an advanced level. Recommended for libraries serving programs in women's studies, sociology, psychology, social work, counseling, or criminal justice. Upper-division undergraduates and above. -R. T. Sigler, University of Alabama
