Summary: | Autonomy of art and political utopias: The Polish art scene of the 1960s and 70s is characterized by a unique diversity, whose free development was barely hindered by the state.Through examining its own modernist tradition and contact with artistic movements in the West, a conceptual art scene on an international level developed that has remained nearly unknown in Germany until today. In cooperation with the Archiv der Avantgarden, the Kupferstich-Kabinett is presenting important stages, from the beginnings to the imposition of martial law in 1981.The spectrum ranges from positions that analyse language and images to positions critical of society and institutions, all of which are presented in the new publication.Published on the occasion of the exhibition, Exercises in Freedom: Polish Conceptual Art 1968-1981 in cooperation with the Archiv der Avantgarden (29 June - 23 September 2018), Kupferstich-Kabinett, Dresden.English and German text. |
