This volume, the first of a new series of books devoted to Auden studies, is a welcome addition to the field. It contains a number of important new works by Auden, including six poems written in German in the 1930s and the first complete version of the early essay "Writing." The volume includes a number of letters with annotations and an important addition to the B. C. Bloomfield and E. Mendelson bibliography (CH, Sep'73). There are plans for subsequent volumes centered on particular topics. This is clearly an important and useful undertaking. Highly recommended for college, university, and public libraries. -D. A.
